Tara's Tale!

This young "Woodland Trust" wood is very popular with local dog walkers. It's got ample parking and easy to find. Being part of open access land you can walk anywhere within it's boundaries and has some lovely flora in late spring.  This is one of Tara's favourite places for a good old fashioned run about and is an ideal short family walk all year round. Stratton Wood. In 1996 The Birchgrove Group sponsored the planting of 1200 trees to create a living and lasting tribute to the lives of people with haemophilia who were infected with

HIV.

Start Point

The walk starts from the Stratton Wood car park.

From the Stratton direction: take B4141 Kingsdown Road, just after you cross over the A419 turn left at the Bus stop. From the Highworth direction: turn off the A361 onto B4141 Kingsdown Road, turn right just past the crematorium.
(see map)

Directions

1. Head towards the wood from the back of the car park and through the metal gate and along the gravel path

2. Turn right at the park bench near to where the gravel paths fork and make your way through the trees along one of the un-surfaced paths.

3. When you come out of the trees, cross over the tarmac path, go through the tree line into the next field and continue straight ahead along the grass path passing some bungalows to reach the tree line at the bottom of the field.

4. Now turn left and continue along the path between the trees staying on it as it bends left.

5. When the path widens, turn right and go through the gap, over the stream and continue along the path through the meadow keeping the tall trees on your left.

6. At the end of the path turn left and cut through the trees and over a wooden footbridge into a large meadow and turn right

7. After a few yards bear left and follow the path around the edge of this meadow keeping the trees on your right side.  Then turn left in the next two corners.

8. Just before the clump of trees in the next corner, turn right, walk over the wooden railway sleepers in the ground and through the trees into a another field. Take the left hand wide path and walk straight ahead along it to reach a gravel path that will take you back to the car park.
