Tara's Tale!

This Trail takes you through the "Great Wood" and through parts of Stanton Park, The park provides an exceptionally wide range of habitats such as remnants of ancient woodland, hedgerows, wildflower meadows, wetlands, a lake, streams and a series of recently restored ponds. This is a great Trail in the hot summer months as much of it is amongst the shade of the trees.  This walk highly recommended, totally safe from Farm animals and a real Joy. Ideal for a picnic stop at Stanton Park by the lake.  There is plenty to discover at the park and the Great Western Community Forest has produced this great leaflet to download. Beware that the Parkland section has grazing sheep, our trail avoids this area. This walk is muddy in the very wet months.

Start Point

The walk starts from the Stratton Wood car park.

From the Stratton direction: take B4141 Kingsdown Road, just after you cross over the A419 turn left at the Bus stop. From the Highworth direction: turn off the A361 onto B4141 Kingsdown Road, turn right just past the crematorium.
(see map)

Directions

1. From the car park head into Stratton Wood through the metal gate and along the gravel path.

2. At the bench & Poo Bin, turn right and make your way through the trees along one of the mud paths.

3. When you come out of the trees, find the gap in the tree line and go through it into the next field. Then continue straight ahead along the grass path passing some bungalows/mobile homes to reach the tree line at the bottom of the field.

4. Near the bottom of the field bear right into the corner and leave Stratton Wood through the wooden gate onto Kingsdown Lane and turn right.

5. After just a few yards take the marked footpath on the left at the wooden post and continue along the public footpath keeping the trees to your left (sign posted).

6. At the end of the field the footpath continues along a track passing a wood on your right.

7. As you meet a concrete path turn right and then left and take the path through the trees towards Stanton Fitzwarren & Blunsdon (sign posted)

8. Just before a small wooden gate that leads into a field, bear left back onto the main public footpath turning right.

9. A little way along turn right in front of the big stone wall and follow the public footpath (marked)

10. Cross the small stream and continue along the main path keeping straight ahead

11. After a short way and as you come out of the trees cross the wooden stile on the right and then turn left sign posted to Stanton Fitzwarren

12. After approx 40 yards turn right at the sign post to the "Lake" and "Woodland", walk along the edge of the lake to the wooden bridge

13. Cross the wooden bridge and turn right, go over the next bridge and turn left, then left again at the sign post to "Farm Park"

14. Continue along the surfaced path ignoring the next two turnings, the first one is sign posted to the "Parkland" and the next to the "Car Park" but continuing along in the direction of the "Great Wood".

15. At the end of the path turn right then immediately left sign posted to Blunsdon and continue along the concrete path

16. Just before the wooden sign post turn left and walk along the path through the "Great Wood" you will recognize this point from earlier in the walk.

17. At the end of the path turn right back onto Kingsdown Lane Track.

18. Just past the Crematorium turn left back into Stratton Wood, you are now on the path from earlier, so bear left, continue through this large field, then through the trees. At the bench turn left to bring you back to the car park.
