Tara's Tale!

Enjoy some spectacular views along this trail. 3 separate starting points depending on how energetic you are feeling. SP1 starts 208 feet above sea level so can be a bit blustery! We suggest good footwear for this trail especially in wet weather. There is a very small section with cows and sheep may be in the field at the start of SP1 at certain times of the year.

Start Point

SP1 Take A3461 from Wroughton. At the top of the hill turn right at the cross roads opposite the entrance to the Science Museum continue along and park in the lay by on the right by the footpath signpost (see map)

SP3 Continue along the same road to the end turn right, round the bend and then as the road bends again park on the verge on the right. (see map)

SP2 Take A3461 from Wroughton, turn right sign posted Elcombe. Park on the verge by the entrance to the field on corner. (see map)

THE MAIN DIRECTIONS

2. After a further 50 yards go through the metal kissing gate on the right by the footpath sign. Warning there may be sheep in this field at certain times of the year.

Walk across this field keeping to the well worn path as it leads you along the top of the hill.  As the path disappears head for the top corner and an old stile.

3. From here make your way down the bank, it's best to walk right a short way rather than straight down!!  Head towards the line of trees at the bottom and cross through them onto the Bridle way turning left walk along the Bridle way

4. Continue through the metal gate at the end and up the hill through the trees. Can you hear the geese yet!

5. Cross over the lane sign posted to Bassett Down

Now go to step 6

5A. Where the Bridle way crosses the lane turn left

6 Walk up the track following the sign post to Bassett Down. Go through the metal gate (or over the style). Warning there could be cows in this short section.

See the geese yet?

Go through the next 2 metal gates and once in the next field continue ahead keeping the trees on your right all the way to the road. Put dogs on the lead as you approach.  Cross the road.

7. Continue along bridle way. After 200 yards walk past the paddock.

8. Just past the paddock go through the gap between the metal gate and the wooden fence on the right and down the track through the woods.

At the bottom of the track just as you leave the woods walk past the track on your left leading up the hill, you'll walk up here in a minute, but for now continue a little further and admire the magnificent views whilst resting a while on the bench dedicated to "George".

9. When you are ready turn back and take the path now on your right up the slope. Continue along the path enjoying the views before you enter the wood. Stay on the path as it tracks along the contour of the hill, don't bear right down the hill at all.

10. Just after the "hair pin" bend turn left taking the track up the hill and out of the woods to the wooden gate

11. Go through the kissing gate and turn left along the path keeping the trees on your left. Stay on the path as it bears left back to the paddock.

12. Follow the path back to the road you crossed earlier.

13. For SP3 only

Turn right and walk back up the road to the car

13. For SP1 & 2 only

Take care crossing the road again and follow the same route along the edge of the field, through the 2 metal gates, over the stile and back to the lane.

14. For SP1 only

Turn right and walk up the lane. It's a bit of climb but when you reach the top turn left and walk back to the car.

14. For SP2 only

Cross over the lane and back along the Bridle way to the car
