Tara's Tale!

An interesting quick walk starting from the outskirts of Hodson village taking you through the Burderop Estate. No livestock apart from a few horses, which means you can run off your lead most of the way around and rummage through the woods!!

Start Point

This trail starts at the north end of Hodson village. Head towards Chiseldon along the A346 from Junction 15 of the M4. Turn right and drive through Chiseldon on the B4005 towards Wroughton. Look out for the Hodson turning on the right. Drive all the way through the village and look out for the large mast on the right and park up by the footpath sign and stile

(see map)

Directions

1. After parking up on the side of the road near to the metal barn and mast, go over the stile into the field. Turn right, walk around the edge of the field for approximately 300 yards to the stile on the right leading into the copse.

2. Go over the stile into the copse and turn left.  Walk along the path through the copse to the kissing gate. NB. ignore the footpath on the right leading down the hill.

3. Leave the copse through the kissing gate and turn right and continue along the edge of the field to the corner of the field where the hedge line goes off 90 degrees from the trees on the right.

4. Go through the kissing gate in the corner leading into the wood and walk along the top of the bank

5. At the bottom of the slope, take the left hand path through the kissing gate and up the slope.

At the top of the slope bear right (don't go up the hill) and continue ahead keeping the trees on your right and walking past a metal gate.

6. As you come out of the woods cross straight over the track and go through the trees (no sign post), and down the slope.

7. At the bottom of the slope go through the kissing gate and follow the path around the left side of the field (horses usually in this field).

8. After about 200 yards go through the metal kissing gate on the left by the stream.  Follow the path amongst the trees, just after the wooden footbridge turn right where the path splits and continue along the bank of the stream until you leave the woods.

9. Turn right at the gravel path and walk down the slope, continue along the track, under an old railway bridge and up the hill along the tarmac path.

10. Turn right Just before the main road and follow the footpath sign to Coate Water.

11. The path continues to the left of the gates of "Pinkcombe House" and through the "Lich gate" Keep to the left down the hill to the bottom

12. Leave the Garden through the gate and head straight across the field. Go through the gap in the tree line and up the hill keeping the trees on your left.

13. At the top of the hill continue straight ahead into the wood as indicated by the red topped posts in the ground. Turn left in front of the kissing gate and back onto the path you came along earlier.

14. Go through the kissing gate and turn left

15. Look out for the Kissing Gate back into the copse just after the large Oak Tree - watch out as it may be obscured by vegetation. Walk along the path to the stile on the right.

16. Go over stile , turn left and walk back to the start point.
