Tara's Tale!

Wow, a superb walk and if I lived nearer here we'd be back here all the time. We walked it on a nice sunny day in the summer and the paths were clear and well sign posted. The views were stunning and best of all there were no sheep or cows.  We did have to go through a paddock with a single horse but it can be avoided with ease.  Give this one a go I highly recommend it. We also had a paddle in the river at the end to cool off.

These directions were written after we walked this route in June 2009, we have not been back to verify they are correct and therefore may contain errors.  If you walk this route using these directions, please write to us to let us know if there are any mistakes

1) Opposite the Plough Inn take the road that leads you up the public Byway.

2) After a short climb up the hill, bear right and take the public footpath.

3) Stay on the footpath for some quite some way as it tracks the bottom of the wood, to reach a cross road with another Byway, then turn left.

4) At the next cross road turn left and walk up the Byway passing a cottage.

5) At the top of a short climb up the Byway you will reach a gap in the tree line and another crossroad, turn left again here and walk along the footpath that takes you across a large field.

6) When you reach the other side of the field go through the gap in the tree line in the left hand corner, cross over the Byway and through the gap on the other side and follow the Bridleway across a narrow field and through some trees.

6a) We didn't walk it but by looking at the map you could turn left on the Byway and follow it all the way back to the start of the walk, on another visit this is the way we would try as it should avoid two stiles that you will meet later on in this walk.

7) You will eventually come out near a large fenced enclosure. The path tracks the edge of enclosure and bears left and up the hill back into the woods.

8) At the top of the hill turn right then immediately left and walk along the edge of the field keeping the trees on your left hand side.

9) When the hedge stops, stay in the same field and walk down the hill towards the trees, then bear right around the bottom of the field to the corner of the wood.  From this corner you will see a barn at the bottom of the hill.

10a) Route avoiding stiles: Head towards this barn to join the road to bring you back into the village, this route avoids two stiles.

10b) Route with two stiles: Enter the wood from through the gap in the corner walk down the hill through the wood to the bottom. Cross over the stile, walk through the paddock and over the 2nd Stile. Take the footpath to the right of the stile which brings you out in the village, near the river. Note dogs will need to jump or be carried over these stiles.as they are fenced at the bottom.
