Tara's Tale!

An interesting walk with some opportunity to vary the trail.  The walk is partly along an enclosed bridle way and partly across open countryside some of which is available thanks to the Open Access legislation. The picturesque village of Coleshill is almost entirely owned by the National Trust and this walk takes you across parts of Coleshill Park

As it is a working farm you can expect to meet plenty of cows along the way, the park is quite large so if you have a well behaved dog you should be able to avoid them - keep them on the lead through the fields.

Start Point

Coming from the Swindon / Highworth direction on the B4019, turn right at the Coleshill sign just after the small bridge at the entrance to Coleshill National Trust Village. Park on the roadside in front of the gate ahead. The walk starts from the bridle way signpost

(see map)

Directions

1. Cross the cattle grid and follow the blue bridle way sign along the concrete drive and continue on it as it turns into an unmade mud & gravel track. You may prefer to walk along the grass instead. Watch out for cows!

2. When the track splits, take the right hand fork in the direction of the blue bridle way sign and towards the cottage

3. Cross over the stile in front of the cottage and walk down the enclosed track. Stay on the main path until you reach a turning off to the left.

4. At the turning walk toward the gate and cross over the stile on the left, a DEFRA map should be displayed indicating it's open access land.  Either walk straight across the field to the kissing gate or turn left and follow edge of the field to reach the same point.

5. Go through the kissing gate and turn left and walk around the edge of the field and up towards Strattenborough Castle, a wonderful Folly.  NB. as it's a hayfield grass may be wet in winter and long in summer months!

6. Turn right and walk past the Folly and continue around the top edge of the Hay field with the trees to your left and head towards Tellhard's Copse.

7. Staying in the field turn right when you reach the corner and walk around Tellhard's Copse on your left back to the metal kissing gate

8. Go through the kissing gate
Option 1 - shorter walk - back straight across the field to the wooden gate
Option 2 - via river - turn left and walk around the edge of the field turning right twice to bring to the wooden gate. Dogs should be able to find a way into the river for a swim and cool down.

9. Cross back over the stile beside the wooden gate

Either, continue up to the track and turn left and walk back along the path to the start of the walk, or cross the stile on the left and walk through the fields along the footpath back to the start

If you chose the later, walk along the footpath (through the middle of the field) towards the church that you see in the distance.

10. About 3/4 of the way across the field look out for a wooden gate and stile on the right.  Cross the stile and continue walking in the direction of the church and back to the start of the walk
