Tara's Tale!

This trail takes you out to Hodson and the open countryside via Coate Water Country Park. There is lots of opportunity to take a dip in the lake on the way out and the way back in. Some great views across south Swindon along the way.

Start Point

Coate Water Country Park's Car Park
(see map)

Directions

1. From the car park walk up the tarmac path on the left side of ranger center and around the left side of the lake along either the upper cycle path or lower lake path.

2. Cross the long bridge over the lake and then turn left along the cycle path.

3. At the end of the gravel path continue on tarmac path that bears around to the right then the left and head towards the spiral bridge that crosses over the motorway. As you approach put dogs on the lead for obvious safety reasons.

4. Cross over the spiral bridge and then go through the kissing gate on the right and head diagonally across the field to the top left corner.

5. Go through the kissing gate in the corner and follow the foot path to the right through the wooded area heading up the hill.

6. Leave the wooded area and take the foot path along the top of edge of the field keeping the hedge line on your right. Enjoy the views.

7. In the corner of the field take the footpath down the hill sign posted to Hodson. Bear right and go through the kissing gate then turn right again and up the bank and continue along the path to the next kissing gate

8. Go through the kissing gate, turn left and walk along the edge of the field keeping the trees to your left.

9. Just past the big oak tree turn left and go through the kissing gate to walk along the path through the trees.

10. After a short while cross the stile on your right side that leads back into the field and turn left to continue around the edge of the field heading towards the mast.

11. After the corner of the field cross over the stile on your left into the road. Put dogs on the lead at this point. Turn right walk along the road and down the hill.

There are no foot paths along the road for about 200 yards so take care! Once around the corner you can walk along the grass verge and over road bridge above the motorway.

12. Continue along the road through the traffic lights, down the quiet road and around the bend at the bottom. Pass the kissing gate into the field and past "Broome Manor Cattery"

13. On the apex of the next bend turn right into Coate Water, cross over the long wooden bridge and continue along the path.

14. Cross back over the bridge and then either take the left path and walk along the water's edge or continue straight ahead along the top cycle path back to the car.
