Tara's Tale!

This is a quick walk but worth an explore about. The wood is part of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and there are some stunning views. This ancient wood of 1000 years has some beautiful flowers in spring. The Wood is surrounded by grazing land and in the late spring and summer months you should watch out for Cows.  This should not put you off as once you are into the wood you can run off your lead without any worries.  The wood is in the middle of a valley so you should have fun running up and down the banks!

Start Point

From Wroughton take the road towards Avebury (A4361)

You can either park in the layby on the right near the top of the hill and walk back down it a short distance. The walk starts from the second kissing gate on the right. This can be a busy road without any footpaths so take care. Or, you might prefer to turn in right just before the start of the walk, and park in the church car park situated a few yards along the no through road and then walk a much shorter distance up the hill to the kissing gate on the left. The entrance to Clouts Wood is clearly marked.   see map

Directions

1. Go through the kissing gate from the main road, through the 2nd gate and down the hill along the hedge line to reach the entrance to the reserve.

2. Cross the footbridge and along the path cross the next 2 small footbridges and bear right up the hill and along the main woodland path until you reach the Nature reserve notice board.

3. Turn right and go down the steps turning left after a few paces to continue along the footpath.

4. Take the second footpath after the wooden fence that bears left. NB. The public footpath goes straight on but we take the wider unmarked path left and up the steps leading you to the top of the valley.

5. Take a few breaths, then continue along the path.

6. Bear left where the footpaths fork and continue along the path, through the gap in the fence, stay on the path until you reach a kissing gate leading you out of the wood.

7. Before leaving the wood, check for cows and put dogs back on the lead.  Leave the wood through the gate (watch the bog around the gate in wet weather, Yuck!!) turn left and walk a few paces along the tree line then turn left back into the wood again crossing over the stile.

8. continue ahead to the point where the paths meet.

9. Turn right and walk back along the path, down the slope and across the footbridges and leave the reserve through the gate. Stop a for a drink and wash in the stream, that's the dogs not you!! When ready walk back up the hill and through the gates to the main road.
