Tara's Tale!

About a third of this walk takes you across cow fields so dogs will need to kept on a lead and under control. If you feel uncomfortable around cows or you dog reacts badly to them, this is trail is unsuitable for you. There are several hills to climb but the views are well worth it.  You'll need good eye sight but you can pick out the White Horse on a clear day.

Start Point

Head towards Wootton Bassett on the A3102 from the M4 junction 16.  Take the first road on the left opposite Sally Pussey's Inn. Stay on this lane bearing left down the no through road until the very end and park up outside Bincknoll Farm
(see map)

Directions

Beware, cow zone!

1. Starting opposite Bincknoll Farm go over the stile, through the wooden gate and across the field to the woods ahead.

2. Go over the stile that leads into the woods and walk up the steep hill on the right hand side to a gate and the "White Horse Trail" sign.

3. Go through the gate and head straight across the large field to the other side.

Should be cow free here!

4. Walk straight ahead through the narrow field and then into a larger field ahead.

5. Continue across the larger field passing "Honey Hill Copse" on your right.

6. Once across the field go over the horse jump (or walk slightly further up the hill and through the gate) and walk along the path around edge of the wood at the top of the hill (enjoy some fantastic views from here)

7. Leave the field through the gate and turn immediately left, go through the wooden gate and walk all the way up the steep hill to the top.

8. At the top of the hill leave the wood through the gate, turn right and follow the path along the fence around to the right to a metal gate.

Beware, cow zone!

9. The next 2 fields are likely to contain cows so you have two choices. Option 1 with cows) go through the wide metal gate then bear left and through the wooden gate and across the first field to the stile opposite, then across the next field turning left onto the track, follow the track which bends right.

Option 2 without cows) at the metal gate turn left walk along the edge of the field keeping the wooded area on your right, go into the next field still keeping the wooded area on your right follow the edge of the field around until you get to another metal gate. Go through the gate, turn left and walk along the track.

Should be cow free here!

10. Turn left in front of the metal gate, and walk up the hill along the wide track with the wooded area on your left.

11. At the top of the hill continue straight ahead along the track until you get to another gate.

Beware possibly more cows here!

12. Go through the gate and continue straight ahead then descend down the hill through the trees back to the stile that you crossed earlier.  Go over the stile and cross the field back to the starting point
